This month we are celebrating our 8th birthday. Looking back, we have come a long way since we began back in 2005 with only one client and one Genie. Back then I couldn't have imagined that we would be where we are today ...

I hit 80% of the goals I set for myself in 2013, including moving office. I've now hired Ciaran as our first apprentice Genie!

Over the years, as the company has grown, so have my goals. Last November, I wrote down my goals for 2013. Reviewing that list to check on my progress ready to write the goals for 2014 was a great experience. I have achieved over 80% of the targets set. The big ones were to have moved offices, taken control of the website and to hire two more Genies.

We moved the business from my home into an office with purpose built work stations for the staff back in April. The website was fully moved over in July so now we can make changes to it when we want to. We recruited Sarah (a returning Genie) before we moved offices and last month we took on an apprentice, our 8th Genie. He's still a baby genie; only 18 with a year's apprenticeship ahead of him, but he's growing up quick!

Here Ciaran tells us in his own words about his time with us so far:

"I've been working for The Office Genie for two short weeks and already I feel like a valuable part of the team. I have been welcomed with open arms by all and have been given responsibility I would not have imagined to have so soon after starting. I am trusted to get on with tasks independently and believe me I appreciate it.

As it is an apprenticeship, I imagined this would be the bridge between education and the working world and expected to be treated as students are; with an air of lower importance than my colleagues. This is however, not the case at all. I am treated with respect by all and I feel that everyone has a level of confidence in me that I must admit I did not have for myself to begin with.

So I'm the new guy - in actual fact the only guy - and the age gap between me and the other Genies is a big one. This fazed me to begin with; I wasn't sure what to expect, but the girls have all been very kind and chatty, helping me to get settled in.

The job is not an easy one; there's been so much to learn in such a short space of time, but I feel like I'm keeping up - albeit barely. From day one I hit the ground running, soaking up all sorts of new and interesting information. I have learned a lot, not only about what we do as a company, but also about the way a business works. This has given me a whole new light to look at business owners in, as they make all of this appear so effortless. Honestly, congrats Jacqui.

All in all, it's been a good start to work. Prior to this, the only time I'd ever had a job was a few days of temp work in a factory; gruelling manual labour, solitary hours of silence and boredom. The changeover from that role to this one has been amazing, I could never go back there!

I guess I just want to say a big thanks to Jacqui for taking me on and just as big a thanks to the Genies for making me feel like a part of the team."

Like all our Genies, Ciaran is being trained to answer the telephone calls on behalf of our clients, as well as undertaking the admin and VA tasks that suit his skill set. All of our Genies receive support and training from Customer Service Specialist Marie Cross of First Impression Training and Ciaran will regularly spend time with her as well.

Along with the support of the local college, he will have an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Customer Service when he has completed his apprenticeship.

I had a successful 20-year career as an office manager and personal assistant; however, my job was no longer focused on the customers and became all about the numbers. My customer-focused background began when I was 12 in my father's independent carpet showroom. I had a spell with Marks & Spencer before I moved into office-based jobs. I have worked as a training administrator, a PA and PA/office manager in a variety of industries from manufacturing to the IT education sector.

Meanwhile, my husband Ian, a successful Northampton based Master Decorator and owner of Rainbow Frost, was losing out on work due to missed phone calls. When he was busy, callers were getting his voicemail but weren't leaving messages. I knew how to fix that problem!

I quit my job and took on Ian as the first client of The Office Genie in November 2005. Word quickly spread with the second client coming on board just one week later. The majority of our clients since have come to us through word of mouth recommendations and networking referrals. Over the years, I have become well connected in Northampton and Milton Keynes.

Outside of work I enjoy swimming, roller skating, the theatre and my cats and dogs!
