Castaway Call Handling
Though hopefully without the beards ...

As a business owner, you hope you never find yourself in the situation in which Tom Hanks' character found himself in Cast Away, or even Captain Phillips for that matter. How would you manage being stranded with no access to a phone? Who would handle your calls?
Now, being stranded on a desert island or being captured by Pirates is a little far fetched, but given the French propensity to strike, it is quite likely that if you are visiting the South of France on holiday you could find yourself stranded at some point.
And with the Phoenix Dust Storm and the Icelandic volcanic ash a couple of years ago, planes around the world were grounded for days upon end, depending on where the ash cloud was dispersing on the given day. Then some countries were flying and others weren't and people were frantically trying to find alternative ways home.
There are a number of things that need doing when you are stranded. Your nearest and dearest need to know not to expect you, your appointments the following day need rescheduling, the kennels need to know you are not going to pick the dog up on time, the schools need to know that your children won't be back until after the start of term.
And that list of phone calls could cost you the earth from your mobile when you're abroad! I don't know about you, but I'm never confident using a foreign payphone!
"Of course, if you have a call handling service from The Office Genie, then you needn't worry about any of this!"
Just ring us, give us the numbers - or names if you don't have numbers - and we'll do our best to track the right people down and let them know what is going on, passing on your apologies for the inconvenience.
You needn't worry when the French baggage handlers are causing issues as the BBC usually tells everyone about it (though in the interest of fairness we should make it clear there are other news services available!).
When the Icelandic volcano was causing chaos there was update after update after update on each news programme, so most people will understand. There will be a few grumbles, but as there is nothing they, us or you can do about it there is no point in worrying about it.
And, because a call handling service picks up your incoming calls too, even if we don't manage to reach everyone for you, when they ring up to try and find out what is going on, we can still tell them what's happened and when to expect you back. If you have briefed your call handling service well, they will be able to carry on as if you had simply extended your holiday - so questions will be answered, appointments booked and things will run smoothly.
In many ways, a call handling service is just like having your own PA to field the difficult things when you are not there. So if you do end up stranded, growing a beard (I think I prefer the Captain Phillips one personally!) and you're cut off from the world for a short period then we, as your call handling service, would be able to handle that for you.
Last year we were covering the phones for a business owner who was going into hospital. He didn't know how long it would take for him to recuperate, but we were there for him until he called to say he was taking back the reins.
So, if you are looking for a call handling service that can deal with those tough situations, call me on 01604 529170 and I can put a package together for you. Or we can talk about our desert island disc choices!
Until next time ...
THE OFFICE GENIE
I had a successful 20-year career as an office manager and personal assistant; however, my job was no longer focused on the customers and became all about the numbers. My customer-focused background began when I was 12 in my father's independent carpet showroom. I had a spell with Marks & Spencer before I moved into office-based jobs. I have worked as a training administrator, a PA and PA/office manager in a variety of industries from manufacturing to the IT education sector.
Meanwhile, my husband Ian, a successful Northampton based Master Decorator and owner of Rainbow Frost, was losing out on work due to missed phone calls. When he was busy, callers were getting his voicemail but weren't leaving messages. I knew how to fix that problem!
I quit my job and took on Ian as the first client of The Office Genie in November 2005. Word quickly spread with the second client coming on board just one week later. The majority of our clients since have come to us through word of mouth recommendations and networking referrals. Over the years, I have become well connected in Northampton and Milton Keynes.
Outside of work I enjoy swimming, roller skating, the theatre and my cats and dogs!
