A Virtual Assistant's Life Of Pi

Do you recognise these characters in your business?

Would you think it's really bad to write a blog post about Virtual Assistants and the characters of a film you've never watched? Will you let me off if I tell you I've read the book at least twice and think it's brilliant?

A Virtual Assistant's Life Of Pi

When we set the theme for this month as adventure/holiday/journey movies, I got excited about the list we came up with. I wanted to include the Life of Pi book. I read it whilst I was on holiday, pregnant with my son, so it holds fond memories for me. I was looking forward to a trip down memory lane. Then I panicked as I realised the topic was Virtual Assistants. How on earth was I going to weave it in?

So having slept on it (and slept on it some more) and picked up the book again, it occurred to me that the occupants of the boat (and now I have to be careful to avoid spoiling what is an excellent book and hopefully a good movie) all represent people in the life of a busy business owner or a busy virtual assistant.

  • Spotted hyena

The time vampire. Those people that kill your every attempt to complete your to do list. Just as the spotted hyena was killing people off, preventing them from reaching their destination, the time vampire hinders you from reaching a successful conclusion of each day.

  • The zebra

The Zebra is easily camouflaged. A good virtual assistant or call handling service should easily represent your company without your clients knowing you are outsourcing some of the work. We have launched a call answering package specifically for VAs, it's called the Camouflage Genie. Just like our usual call handling service we will appear like you so your clients need never know it is not you providing them with the service.

  • The orang-utan

Looking after VIP clients is important to any business owner. You need someone to Mother them through the process (oops, sort of a spoiler, but I'm not going to explain it so you can watch the movie/read the book to explain it). Whether it's a virtual assistant taking on the responsibility of baby-sitting your big clients through the process or providing your Call Handling service with a list of your VIP clients, you can give them the best service without having to do it yourself.

  • Pi himself

Being a business owner is like living your own adventure story. There is this feeling at times when everything is out of your control. There is also an immense feeling of the unknown - what will work, where will it take us, what will happen next. What is your America? What is your final destination, where you can breathe a sigh of relief because you made it?

  • The Bengal Tiger called Richard Parker

Everyone has a tiger, a fear for the future. Sometimes the fear prevents you from getting where you want to go. But if you can tame it, you can focus on your destination, on enjoying your journey. Pi has to tame the tiger so they can live on the boat together. He never stops worrying that it might turn on him, but by learning to master it, even in small ways, they make it to the end - where the tiger slopes off into the sunset and leaves Pi to live his life.

"What is your Bengal Tiger? Can you learn to master it so that you can reach your goals?"

So it's all got a little bit philosophical now. Just remember that in your journey as a business owner or entrepreneur, you can get some help to shoulder the burden. To talk to us about our virtual assistant or call handling services call on 01604 529170 and maybe we can ride the boat together into the sunset?

Until next time ...

I love playing with words and I have dreamed of being a writer since I was a child. With a romantic idea of scribbling away in a cold attic room with my trusty fountain pen. I have always dabbled, but until now it’s not come to much.

When I started with The Office Genie it was to provide me with a part time income to support my writing. Over time though I have developed into the Marketing Genie on a full time basis. I love it, I get to play with words all day as I try to share the dream and the passion that Jacqui has turned into The Office Genie. My work involves blogging, letter writing, email writing, web copy writing, e-book writing, campaign planning, strategy planning, social media interactions – it’s like I write and talk all day every day, my parent would say it’s the ideal job for me!

My first blog posts were about my day to day life as a Genie but they are growing into sharing my view of the business world. I am passionate about helping small businesses be the best that they can be, standing out from their competition in the small things that come together to give an impression of great service – to find out how we can help you should call me on the number below.
